May’s L A Cinema presentation is the American musical and period drama, The Colour Purple, which is based on the Alice Walker novel and is a remake of Steven Spielberg’s 1985 Oscar nominated movie.

This retelling of Walker’s acclaimed novel is based on the popular stage musical of the same name. The Colour Purple tells the story of Celie, an African American woman dealing with the hardships of living with an abusive husband and dealing with the abuse and bigotry of living in the American South during the early 1900’s.

The Colour Purple is a “showstopping musical that’s vibrant, ambitious and brings Alice Walker’s novel to life with rousing gospel numbers.” The Colour Purple received several film award nominations in various categories at the Critics Choice Awards. Fantasia Barrino was nominated in the Leading Actress category for the BAFTA and Golden Globe. Supporting actress, Danielle Brooks was nominated for her role in the Best Supporting Actress category for the BAFTA, Golden Globe and the Academy Award.
